We all probably spent happy moments on the beach with our friends, like trying built making a sandcastle or even tried to create something more detailed by burying your friend and making them look like a mermaid. However, some artists like Andoni Bastarrika take this routine activity to a high level by transforming wet sand into incredible sculptures three-dimensional. Bastarrika’s series of mind-boggling, realistic animal sculptures look like they’re taking a nap by the ocean.

The artist started creating sand sculptures around ten years ago and he uses the Basque beaches in northern Spain to create his wonderful art and he often use found objects on the beach as embellishments. Andoni has made many amazing sand sculptures include a horse, a great white shark, a toothy alligator, a rhino, and even an elephant, he also posts photos of the completed projects on his Instagram.

In an interview with Bored Panda, Andoni revealed “They knew what they were doing, I devoted myself to developing this gift and have spent the last 10 years doing just that.

“In order to create a sculpture, an unthinkable number of sand particles participate, hugging each other tightly through humidity, so that someone could model their union,” says the artist. “And once the artist steps back, its piece will remain at the mercy of nature, meaning that sooner or later the wind will dry them up and release each particle, slowly consuming all the individuality and authenticity.”
